Behaviour – 1 of 3 – The 3 Keys of Performance Leadership

Forget ‘Performance Management’ which implies control, and do ‘Performance Leadership’ which implies freedom.

The 3 key things to do:

1. As a leader, be an inspiration – be the role model for the behaviour you ask for, need and expect from others. As a leader it is not your job to ‘inspire others’ – that is an impossible task, most often because you will devote most of your time on the one or two who will go out of their way never to be inspired – at the expense of sharing valuable time with the majority.

2. Performance Management takes place in a formal session usually once or twice a year – Performance Leadership happens every day – and it is always two ways. It is the informal relationships you have with your people that determine the three elusive T’s that all people really want– Truth, Trust and Transparency.

3. And if you do have to keep with a formal review – ask the person you are reviewing to score themselves, to be honest about their achievements to date and to plan what they want to achieve in the following period. Kick this off by asking the most powerful coaching, performance and leadership question on earth – ‘How’s it going?’

And then listen…

  1. I like this and very apt for my current situation as I am doing a second interview for the same position as a Sales Manager in a different region, so this will help me with the section of ‘my’ personal brand and how to establish that in my team, and to also assist me with my SWOT recently asked for on my current team. Thank you
