How to ensure your dreams last at least 24 hours

 

 

Because our brain’s number one priority is to keep us alive, it wants us to make very quick decisions – thus preserving energy.

This ‘gut feel’, ‘impulse’ or whatever you call it, can help us. Or hinder us.

For example it helps when it comes to innovation in a crisis.

And it hinders us when we think about an ambitious outcome we want to achieve, with our internal – or infernal – dialogue going something like this:

Lying in bed, you think – “Wow, in our team we could take ownership of projects and ensure they are successful across the organisation.”

And then your inner voice says:

“How are you going to do that then?”

You respond: “I don’t know.”

Your inner voice: “Well, if you don’t know, isn’t that a sign that it’s not possible? I mean, think of all the people you would have to convince, and projects! Are you kidding? Etc. Etc.”

At which point you give up on the idea and go to sleep, accepting that tiny feeling of regret deep in your heart and soul as being just life.

Indeed, I believe most dreams and ambitions die long before we actually do anything about them.

This is how to keep them alive:

Lying in bed, you think – “Wow, in our team we could take ownership of projects and ensure they are successful across the organisation.”

And then your inner voice says:

“How are you going to do that then?”

You respond: “I don’t know – and that doesn’t matter, because I don’t have to know right now. I might be able to make it happen, or I might not.”

Then go to sleep.

Because even the most negative inner voice can’t argue with that one – for anything you want to achieve, you might be able to do it, and you might not, and the only way to find out which is true, is to do something, and see.

This level playing field approach between ‘I can’ and ‘I can’t’ is powerful, and the results are amazing.
