Know where you want to go?

Time to Read – three minutes

Last week we did a whistle stop tour of the formula (Thank you to all the people who wrote to say it had helped them).

This week let’s add a little more detail to navigating the first part –

Know where you want to Go – The What

This is your Outcome – your cornerstone – keep focused on it and returning to it, especially when the going gets tough, blurred or complex.

Focus on it when you get up in the morning, during the day and last thing at night. Write it up and stick it on your wall where you will see it all the time.

And listen up, because this is very important – always focus on what you DO want – NOT on what you DON’T. That’s because of the way your mind works. Whatever you focus on, or believe, with your conscious mind, your subconscious mind will start moving you towards. If you focus on what you do want, you will move you towards that – if you focus on what you don’t want, you will move towards that (what you don’t want), and away from what you do want.

Right now, do NOT think of a huge pink elephant.

In addition:

Word what you want in language a ten year old can understand – the brain craves simplicity.

And

Set a standard (size of dream/ambition/outcome) for yourself, your team or your organisation higher than anyone else can ever reasonably expect of you – this reduces your chance of comparing your success with others, which does not help.

‘Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land amongst the stars’

And that’s it

As with all parts of the formula, so very simple, and so very hard

Next week – Know where you are Now – The You

With my love and best wishes

  1. I will always aim for a higher outcome than I might expect. That way you always overachieve. On the other hand I don’t leave things to chance and I really do plot where I am and where I want to go, before working out how I am going to get there.

  2. I focus on all of these things.
I had a plan for life a few years back and it is sort of working out the way I want because I revisit that plan and make sure I’m constantly monitoring it.
So I know what I want in life and while the getting there is no quite so straightforward, the fact I know what I want and have an idea of how to get there is a help.

  3. I knew where I wanted to go too but never find myself getting there no matter how hard I try.
I think perhaps I am setting my sights a bit high.
I will keep going though. That is a trait of mine of which I am proud.
Tenacity in business is a great asset to have.

  4. Focusing on what you don’t want is just wasted energy in my opinion.
I try to think about the things I do want and it tends to get me where I want to go.
I admit, my planning is not that great and I need to do i bit more directing in terms of what I am trying to get at. Like I say, I get there eventually.

  5. As a Rotarian, I try living my life by the Four-Way Test

    The Four-Way Test
Of the things we think, say and do
    Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”

I find you are in control if you use the 4 questions in your daily life.

    Regards

    Joe
