Making success so easy – failure impossible

success

Why is it that we make success so hard to achieve, and failure so easy? Because of our definitions of success, and failure…

As an example here’s a question asked at scores of Naked Leader Workshops around the world:

Question: What do you have to do to be a success / failure as a parent?

Success Failure
Give them love Raise my voice
and or
Time Condemn their music as “noise”
and or
Set an example Go on about how lucky they are
and or
Never talk down to them Forgetting the name of any of their friends
and or
Ensure their safety Keeping them waiting for more than 30 seconds when I am collecting them

I am sure you see the difference between the two columns.

The left hand column has “and,” the right hand column, “or.” Simple, and yet how each person on this planet thinks. Each and every day, we give ourselves this impossible list, for our days to be successful:

“I must have slept well, and the bathroom must be free, and breakfast must be ready and the road must be free and the train must be empty and no-one better be talking on a mobile phone…” and then it’s still only 9am!

It doesn’t have to be this way. We can change this very quickly, powerfully and in a way that will change our lives forever. How?

We switch the ‘and’ with the ‘or’.

So…

Success Failure
Give them love Raise my voice
or and
Time Condemn their music as “noise”
or and
Set an example Go on about how lucky they are
or and
Never talk down to them Forgetting the name of any of their friends
or and
Ensure their safety Keeping them waiting for more than 30 seconds when I am collecting them

Celebrate each and every moment of success.

And as you will never ‘fail’ you will never give up.

And we can do this, in our minds, in our relationships and in our lives, at any time that we choose.

Which table gives us a greater chance of success?

Which table makes failure almost impossible to achieve?

The answer is obvious.

And the choice is yours.

With my love and best wishes to you all

David

  1. Success and failure are what we make them. Some people’s vision of success, ie a football club who merely wants to stay in the division, is not the same as someone who expects their team to be promoted.
    It’s all relative.

  2. It’s amazing the number of quality subjects that David comes up with.
Thanks for challenging us each week!

  3. So important to celebrate our successes and this is a timely remember as my son has passed his exams with flying colours and we are celebrating as a family.
