Yesterday, an English national football team won its first major trophy since 1966

Then, 56 years ago, the Men’s team beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time, at Wembley to win the World Cup

One day ago, the Women’s team beat Germany 2-1 after extra time, at Wembley to win the Euros

Three things stand out for me:

1. The Coach – Sarina Wiegman was appointed England coach in September 2021 – just 10 months ago – having previously led her native Netherlands to Euros victory in 2017. She was spot on with her substitutes, motivation, and game management throughout the tournament

Action: If you want a job done, go to someone who has done it successfully before

2. The Fans – Sang and supported the national anthems, with no booing

Respect: The FA’s ‘Respect’ programme, started in 2008, delivered in full in 2022

3. Scale: This tournament will accelerate the growth of women’s football in the UK, and around the world – with national teams playing in bigger stadiums and bigger crowds

Thought: That’s the BBC’s Sports Personality of The Year Team Award done then, in July
