The Leadership Deal that changes everything
t’s so easy, quick, fun even, to disagree.
Some leaders in organisations make a living out of it – “No” – “That won’t work” – “We tried that before and it failed”.
In fact, and sorry to be picky – such behaviour has only one, very slight drawback:
It crushes everything in its wake – people, ideas and organisations. And as it will be the imagination, innovation and creativity within your people that will determine whether you succeed or fail, you don’t have time for such consistent negativity.
Here is a very simple solution:
Agree in every meeting, every project – indeed, in every conversation, that it is perfectly fine to disagree, as long as the person doing so comes up with an alternative.
How far you take this is up to you.
Some of our Clients have a rule that you don’t get a say in a decision unless you have contributed to the debate.
Others have gone further – people must justify why they are attending a meeting, based on the number of thoughts, ideas and positive contributions they will make.
For now, though, do a simple deal with your leaders – you are welcome to disagree, to argue and to complain, as long as you come up with a constructive alternative to that being suggested.
In other words – lead me, follow me, or get out of my way.
With my love and best wishes
