The Man in the Mirror
Yesterday was International Men’s Day and the theme for 2017 is Celebrate Men and Boys. I have the great honour today of speaking at a conference to support this aim.
This year the figures show unparalleled numbers of male suicides, males suffering depression and calls to the Samaritans.
Please, as a man, its ok to feel as you do, it really is very brave and a sign of great strength (not weakness) to ask for help, and now more than ever, is a time for you to meet, welcome, and be… you.
We can all encourage men and boys to speak about their feelings, hopes and fears, and we can be ready to listen. We’ve heard Princes William and Harry talking about their feelings when their mother died so suddenly, and how it affected them – they’re showing its ok to feel this and to speak about it. They made a decision to make the difference in mental wellness by starting with themselves.
So, as a man if you’re suffering in this way, take a small step and open up a little – and (as the stats suggest) you’ll probably find that you’re not the only one and you’ve helped someone else by doing so.
And If you’re feeling good about life then remember to be ready with an open heart to hear what your brothers are beginning to articulate. It starts with every single one of us to bring about the difference.
As Michael Jackson wrote and sang:
I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change
With my love and best wishes to you all.
