Your Organisation Is Full of Rollercoasters

There is a wonderful thought from New Scientist that has stayed with me:

‘We are all living, breathing rollercoasters.’

Think about it.

One minute we are flying.

Excited. Energised. Confident. Full of ideas.

The next minute we are plunging downhill.

Worried. Frustrated. Tired. Irritated. Overwhelmed.

Then suddenly, we are climbing again.

That is being human.

So why, when we walk through the doors of work, do we somehow expect everyone to stop being human?

Why do organisations behave as though their people are predictable, rational, consistent creatures who will simply do whatever the strategy, process or PowerPoint says?

They aren’t – and neither are you.

Every organisation is, in reality, a vast collection of living, breathing rollercoasters.

Thousands of individual emotions, motivations, experiences.

And most crucially – choices.

Made by human beings.

And if we want different Organisational outcomes, we need to understand something remarkably simple:

Change the behaviour and you change the organisation.

Not after your next ‘Change Programme’

Not when the new values have been beautifully printed and stuck on the wall.

Now – Today

The Root Cause of leadership – your people are your only real asset, and what they personally choose to do determines what your organisation becomes.
