3 reasons the Scottish independence referendum will be close (and how you can apply them at work)

3 reasons the Scottish independence referendum will be close (and how you can apply them at work)

1.    “Yes” is a far more emotionally positive word than “No”

Apply – Say “yes” more than you say “no” You can say “yes” to mean “no” e.g. “yes, we must stop this project” is more persuasive than “no, this project must stop”.

2.   Alex Salmond is a master at emotional communication – George Osborne is not

George Osborne spent over an hour explaining the economic reasons for “staying together.” Alex Salmond’s response was that he had never heard such “bluff, bluster and blethering.” Genius.

Apply – 3s are emotive – and if each begins with the same letter and increasing numbers of syllables – 1,2,3 – print and wear a label that says ‘Master of Influence’.

3.   Because privacy in the ballot box is very different from disagreeing with the Yes Bandwagon

With opinion polls very close, this may be enough to tip the balance.

Apply – Ask for anonymous feedback, written questions at an open forum and anonymous voting on really contentious issues. This will ensure people don’t get swayed by the most often voiced opinion.

With my love and best wishes

  1. Received by email, thanks…
    Hi David,
I agree it will be close but I hope we stay together.
Personally, I am not sure people realise that this really is a one-off (not reversible in five years time if it’s not working very well, or not what they think they signed up to). Is there a case to be made that Salmond is an emotional bully, I wonder, as has been stated by many?
Have a good week and all best,
    Diana

  2. So it’s a no…and yet a lot of yeses. Will be interesting to see how Scotland unites itself again despite remaining united in the UK.

  3. Very interesting, I found myself saying yes the other day, I love saying yes. I do notice that I also love to contradict, set up a space for the devils advocate. Psychology is a wide world, I love not knowing, it makes us great learners. I’m all ears for future posts. Thanks for sharing David, love the book by the way x
