How do you change the football penalty shootout rules in a way that people will understand?

The tried and tested rules were easy to explain:

The new rules trialled by UEFA in May 2017 were not quite so simple:

One Team starts and takes one penalty, then the other takes two penalties, then the first team take two penalties and so on to a maximum of 5 each and if that doesn’t produce an outright winner it goes to sudden death.
