No Big Deal

The Scene: A One Team Workshop  

The Cast: The 12 team members without their overall manager, Graham, who is otherwise engaged, however his PA, Rebecca is present.

The Script: Leader A: “So, do you think Graham has chosen not to be here because he is leaving?”

Rebecca: “Is he? I didn’t know that.”

Total silence for about 3 seconds, then all turn to Rebecca, all talking at once:

“OMG Rebecca, he didn’t tell you?”

“That’s a disgrace Rebecca”

“You should have been the first to know”

“Typical of our non-communication”

“You must be very upset, finding out like this”

Then Rebecca raised her hand for quiet and said words I will remember forever:

She said, calmly, quietly and without a hint of emotion “It’s no big deal”

Then added – “I am sure he will tell me; however, we have much bigger issues to discuss”

So next time you find something out from a third party, in your organisation, family, or life, you have a choice – make it a big deal, get yourself and everyone stressed, or make it no big deal.
