In 1863, at Gettysburg, Confederate General Lee prepared for battle. His right-hand man, James Longstreet, urged a different move: skip the fight, march on Washington, and force the North to the negotiating table.

That was the mission. That was the outcome.

Lee ignored him. Three days later, 46,000 were dead or wounded — and the South never recovered.
